And That's Why I Write . . .

. . .

The Christmas Dream is yours to share . . .

Each year I write a Christmas story and send it to family and friends . . . Last year I didn’t, I just didn’t feel too cheery. It was a tough year, but I won’t dwell on the past, not here.

It’s already October and I’m not sure what I’m going to write . . . But I always have something biting at my thoughts. And I’m pretty sure, the reason I didn’t write last year will be my gift, this Christmas . . .

For so long I hated Christmas . . . How could such a world come together for just one day and share a moment? What about the rest of the year? I felt lost and miserable. Each Christmas was so dreary and depressing . . .

And that’s when I realized, I was living someone else’s vision of Christmas. Each year we did the same old things, with those who just didn’t give a hoot . . . Christmas had become a chore. So I decided to start my own tradition, something unique to my little family . . . And now each year we go to the Milwaukee Rep’s rendition of A Christmas Carol. And each year we really look forward to spending time together and living the true meaning of Christmas . . .

And from that little tradition has sprung my yearly donation to Heifer in the names of each of my special ones. It’s my way to give someone a new start . . . Life is sharing, helping those in need.

And from there, I decided to spread the word . . . And so I followed the Dickens lead . . . Everyone knows he wrote, A Christmas Carol, but most don’t know he wrote a story each Christmas. And you know what I found? I found my true meaning of Christmas . . .

For me it’s in the words. I don’t write many stories anymore, not since I started writing novels. And each and every summer I start dreaming of something worthy of sharing during a very special time . . . And I usually spend two to three months thinking before something moves me to start banging the keys . . . And now I have that feeling. I love that feeling.

Christmas is such a special time for me . . . This week I went to my Aunt’s funeral. A cousin came up to me and gave me a hug . . . A six foot five man bent over with tears in his eyes and hugged me, thanking me for writing my Christmas Stories . . .

And with tears in my eyes I share this with you . . . We’re all searching for meaning . . . Its right in front of us, we just have to recognize it for what it is, a gift.

And that’s why I write . . .

Dan - what a wonderful purpose you have for Christmas. I too find Christmas pretty dismal when you step back and take stock of the over indulgence that's come to replace the true intent.

Thanks for a great post, I hope you don't mind if I share your idea, it's a wonderful way to mark the season and a unique gift to loved ones.
